The gardens at Irongate Road evolved with the client's needs over two decades. In the first phase, ALA designed a pergola that connects the California bungalow-style house to an existing swimming pool. The pergola provides shade in addition to framing the view of the garden from the perspectives of inside the house as well as from a newly created terrace. A naturalistic stone fountain creates a soothing focal point off of the screened porch. Later, the firm added a conservatory on axis with the swimming pool, completing a series of indoor and outdoor rooms linked to the pool. This project won a Potomac Chapter American Society of Landscape Architecture award in 1998.
