This residence is situated on a 1,500-foot bluff on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee overlooking the valley and city of Chattanooga. Both the challenges and rewards of this project were hot to nestle the residence on the narrow lot and utilize the most interesting rock outcroppings while maximizing views. Shallow soil depths and wind conditions dictated the plant material suitable for this site yet was carefully considered to blend with the surrounding sandstone. When moving through the interiors, the 75-foot-long vanishing edge pool creates a crisp line at the bluff edge that is open year-round. Given the size and geological restrictions of the site, the plan incorporates a large lawn, perennial beds, and plenty of viewing terraces to accommodate the client’s entertaining needs.
